Concrete cracks. Expansion sawing decides where. Cutting control joints into a fresh slab gives the concrete a deliberate weak line to crack along, instead of letting it split across the middle of your driveway or floor.

Timing is the part people get wrong. Cut too early and the saw tears the surface and ravels the edge. Cut too late and the slab has already cracked wherever it wanted to, and the joints you paid for are decorative. The window depends on the mix, the weather and the thickness, which is why it is worth having someone who does this every week rather than fitting it in around other work.

Depth and spacing matter as much as timing. A joint cut too shallow will not control anything, and joints spaced too far apart leave enough slab between them to crack anyway. How soon after the pour should the joints be cut?

It is a window rather than a fixed number, and it moves with the mix, the slab thickness and the weather. Hot, dry, windy days shorten it considerably. Tell us your pour date when you book and we will time it. If you are unsure, call us before the pour rather than after.
