Pattern Cutting on Concrete Driveways and Paths

Pattern cutting is cutting a design into a concrete surface so it reads as pavers or tiles rather than a plain slab. The most common is a diamond pattern set on a 45 degree angle across a driveway, but squares, offset lines and custom layouts all work the same way.

It is detail work and it is the reason people ask for us by name. The lines have to be straight, evenly spaced and consistent in depth across the whole surface, and any wander shows up immediately once the concrete is sealed. Nathan does this work himself rather than handing it to an operator.

Most of it happens on new concrete. If you are building and want a patterned driveway, the cutting is done after the pour has cured, before sealing, and it is often booked on the same visit as the expansion joint sawing. It costs a fraction of laying pavers for a similar look. We also cut patterns into existing concrete that is sound but plain, which is a cheap way to lift a tired driveway without a full rip up and replacement.

Pattern Cutting FAQs

Can you pattern cut concrete that is already down?

Yes, as long as the slab is sound. If the concrete is in good condition but plain, cutting a pattern into it is a much cheaper way to change how it looks than replacing it. If it is cracked or lifting, deal with that first, because a pattern will not hide it.

When should new concrete be pattern cut?

After it has cured and before it is sealed. Talk to us when your concreter gives you a pour date and we will work out the timing with them. Cutting too early can tear the surface and cutting after sealing means the seal has to be redone.

What patterns can you do?

Diamonds on a 45 degree angle are the most common, and squares and offset rectangles are both popular. We can also work to a layout you have seen or drawn. Send us a photo of what you are after and we will tell you honestly whether it will work on your surface.

How deep are the cuts?

Shallow. Deep enough to read clearly as a line and hold a seal, not deep enough to weaken the slab. The depth is matched to the thickness of your concrete.

Does pattern cutting weaken the concrete?

Not when it is done properly. The cuts are shallow and the pattern is laid out to avoid undermining the slab. That is exactly why it is worth using someone who does this work regularly rather than treating it as a general cutting job.
